What Is TMJ/TMD?
TMJ/TMD refers to a set of conditions that affect your temporomandibular joint. This delicate joint is responsible for the connection between your jaw and your skull, and it is located near your ears on either side of your face.
Normally, this joint functions smoothly and allows you to eat, speak, chew, and open your mouth without any difficulties or pain. However, it can become damaged, inflamed and irritated by a variety of different causes. This can lead to painful and uncomfortable symptoms.
Oral trauma, for example, can dislodge or damage parts of the joint. Chronic overuse from teeth grinding or chewing a lot of gum can irritate and inflame the joint, and some diseases like arthritis can impair the proper function. When this happens, the condition is referred to as “temporomandibular joint dysfunction,” or TMJ/TMD for short.
What Are The Signs & Symptoms Of TMJ/TMD?
The most easy-to-recognize indicator of TMJ/TMD is pain and discomfort around your jaw. Your jaw may feel stiff, and it may seem like it is not moving smoothly. You may feel it “clicking” or popping when you open your mouth widely.
Pain near the ear that radiates to the rest of your head is also a common sign of TMJ/TMD. It can also cause migraines, and make it difficult for you to open your jaw properly in severe cases. Your jaw may “lock” in place or you may not be able to open your mouth all the way.
If you notice one or more of these symptoms in Kennewick or Richland, it’s likely that you have a serious issue with your jaw, such as TMJ/TMD. Come to see the experts at Midtown Dental Clinic as soon as you can to get help.
TMJ/TMD Treatment Options
Some cases of TMJ/TMD can be resolved with simple lifestyle changes and a few basic recovery steps. If your TMJ/TMD is caused by jaw overuse from gum chewing, for example, you can cease this habit. Or if you grind your teeth, a nightguard can protect your jaw from the stress of nighttime grinding.
Oral appliance therapy is also commonly used to treat TMJ/TMD. Oral appliances look similar to a nightguard and they are used to prevent teeth-to-teeth contact while shifting your jaw into a healthier position at night.
For more serious cases, treatment may require pharmaceuticals like anti-inflammatory medication or muscle relaxers. Corticosteroid injections to the temporomandibular joint can also help with inflammation. Jaw surgery may be required in rare cases, but is usually a last resort that is only used if all other options have not worked.
