What Is Invisalign? Understanding The Basics

Invisalign is an alternative to traditional braces. Unlike braces, Invisalign uses sets of clear plastic aligners instead of brackets, wires, and rubber bands. These aligners look similar to a night guard for teeth grinding, or a retainer.

Each set of aligners is designed to move your teeth slightly toward a healthier position. Over time, you’ll switch between multiple sets of aligners to correct your orthodontic issues, such as crowded or crooked teeth, gaps in your smile, uneven teeth, and more.

Comparing Invisalign Vs. Traditional Braces

Invisalign has a number of advantages compared to braces. Invisalign is removable to eat and drink, does not affect your appearance, and also takes less time to correct your smile, in most cases.

In addition, it’s a lot more comfortable and convenient. There are no metal pieces to poke your mouth, and you won’t feel as much discomfort while your teeth move. You also don’t need regular adjustments, which means you’ll spend less time in the dentist’s chair.

The Invisalign Process

The process will begin with an appointment at Midtown Dental. Our team will assess your oral health and determine if you’re a good candidate for treatment. If approved, we’ll make a set of dental impressions and take images of your teeth, and our team will work with Invisalign to develop your treatment plan.

In a few weeks, you’ll pick up your first several sets of aligners, and get instructions on how to wear them properly, and how to care for them. You will wear each set of aligners for about 20-22 hours per day, and switch to a new set every 2 weeks.

About every 4-6 weeks, you’ll come to our office for a quick appointment. We’ll inspect your teeth and make sure your treatment is progressing properly, then provide you with your next several sets of aligners.

This process will continue until your teeth have been straightened. Most patients need to wear between 20-24 sets of aligners to straighten their teeth, so the average treatment time is about a year.

Cost Of Invisalign

The cost of Invisalign is different for each patient, and depends on your oral health, the extent of your orthodontic issues, and a number of other factors. However, it’s usually quite comparable to the cost of traditional braces.
